The Best Coleslaw

I absolutely love coleslaw, however it has to be the right kind. On my parents side of the family we have an odd tradition at Christmas and Thanksgiving to have coleslaw with our meals. Most of the time someone brings in KFC’s, which I know is so weird, but now if I do not have it with my dinner it just does not seem complete. I often times order coleslaw at restaurants and it just doesn’t do justice. A few months ago my husband and I wanted some coleslaw with our BBQ chicken sandwiches. I looked up many recipes online and decided to go with this one from allrecipes.com. I have been making it ever since and it is seriously the best coleslaw I have ever had. Better than KFC’s!

Here is what you will need:

  • 1 (16 ounce) package coleslaw mix, I like to get the package with shredded carrots
  • 2 tablespoons minced onion
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

I never seem to have buttermilk in the house and it is too expensive to buy a carton when I just need 1/4 cup. I found a buttermilk substitute here and it works great. I normally pour a 1/4 cup of milk into a container and add maybe a teaspoon or so of white vinegar to the milk. Let it sit for about 5 minute and you have your buttermilk substitute. I have also used this substitute when making banana bread and it works just as great. You can also use lemon juice which I have also done.


Mix all of the ingredients besides the coleslaw and onion into a bowl and whisk together until smooth. Poor over the coleslaw and onion mixture and let it sit for maybe 10 minutes. Make sure to add the onions in, they truly make the coleslaw.
