Composting

I have been composting for over a year now and absolutely love it. We purchased our composter at Costco and I have no complaints about it. Our composter was purchased on clearance, however they sell the same composter on Amazon just a different color.  I love the idea of turning the foods that came from the ground back into the ground. We are composting a lot of food right now due to out diet change. It is nice to use the leftover food for something instead of just throwing it away.

I used to keep a container under the sink and place all of our raw foods in as needed and then empty into the composter every couple of days. Well, there were multiple times that the food didn’t get taken out and there was a moldy mess. Now I keep a bowl on the counter and place all of our fruits, veggies, paper towels, etc in it and take the bowl to the composter every evening. This method has worked out much better for us.

Some of the things we most commonly compost:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Egg shells
  • Paper towels and tissues
  • Newspapers
  • Coffee grounds
  • Compostable items that we get from time to time (cups, napkins, paper plates)
  • Nursing pads
  • Plants and weeds
  • Grass clippings

Since we are eating a ton more raw foods than we had, we are composting a lot right now.

Everyday the composter gets turned and I often add water to moisten the materials, especially in the summer. It is important to have a a good balance not too wet and not too dry. I will be excited to see the rich soil that is produced!

More posts to come about our composting progress.
