Borax Free Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

About a week ago we ran out of dishwasher detergent and the dishwasher really needed to be run. My husband went online and found several recipes for homemade detergents and the one we have been using for the last week is awesome. Borax may be completely safe, however I am not completely convinced. This recipe is Borax free and still works great.

  • 1 cup Baking Soda
  • 1/3 cup Citric Acid
  • 1/3 cup coarse salt (we used Kosher salt)
  • 10-15 drops of citric essential oil (I used lavender as it is one of my favorite scents)
  • Vinegar

After all of the ingredients have been mixed well together, minus the vinegar ,store in an air tight container. For every load add one Tablespoon of the baking soda mixture and fill the prewash section of the dishwasher with vinegar (about 1/8of a cup). For extra dirty or greasy loads add 2 Tablespoons of the baking soda mixture. We buy the large bottle of vinegar at Costco. I filled a recycled bottle with vinegar so I don’t have to pull out the big bottle every time I run the dishwasher. Don’t go out and buy anything for your vinegar, use an empty bottle from around the house. Recycling at it’s finest!

I have been so happy with this detergent. I don’t think I will ever go back to store bought detergent again. By making my own I will save money and I know exactly what is in my detergent.

Do you have a homemade dishwasher detergent that you like? If so please post it below.

Happy washing!
